As the Federal Government weakens Boko Haram, United States yesterday advised President Muhammadu Buhari to sustain the momentum.
Washington has urged the President to put more pressure on Boko Haram
to ensure the insurgents do not regroup even as the country distanced
herself from the Nigerian government negotiations with the group that
led to the release of 21 Chibok girls recently.
United States Under-Secretary of State for Civilian Security,
Democracy and Human Rights, Sarah Sewall, told Daily Sun in Maiduguri
that the Buhari administration has made progress in the fight against
Boko Haram, but Washington wants the Federal Government to step up
pressure on the terrorists.
“From our experiences, insurgency and terrorist groups can be very
resilient, can move and again reconstitute themselves. So, it’s
absolutely critical that both federal and state levels of governments
partner very closely the military campaigns to ensure they can provide
security, services and good governance for the country as Boko Haram is
pushed out particularly in the neighborhoods. At the same time, Nigeria
needs to put pressure on Boko Haram,” Sewall said.
She said the United States which claimed not to be disposed to
negotiation with terror groups, would not comment on how Nigeria secured
the release of her citizenry abducted by terrorists but would rather
support the country’s efforts at getting rid of all forms of terrorism
acts.
“We’re doing what we can in supporting Nigeria through the military
efforts; military partnership which include providing information. We’ve
been engaged in the training of the Nigerian Army. We’re pleased to be
partners with the Nigerian military,” she noted.
She said though Boko Haram came and started before the Syrian-based
ISIS, the U.S. was aware of the grave implication of Boko Haram
allegiance with the international terrorism group.
On the post-insurgency assessment in the northeast, Sewall described
the humanitarian situation as huge. She said Americans all over the
world have been watching the situation in the North-east, Nigeria with
great concern, but were possibly unsure of the extent of the challenges.
“We know that people have suffered greatly from Boko Haram. We also
know that the military has recorded great success and clearing areas in
the northeast where there were great security challenges associated with
Boko Haram which we understand, now resulted into huge humanitarian
crisis here.
“It has been very useful to talk to those who have been displaced or
those who were captured by Boko Haram to those who are seeking to
restore services and security in the areas that have been cleared and
the enormous challenges that still lie ahead. I think there is message
of hope. Progress has been made and I’m convinced that the world needs
to pay attention to the humanitarian situation in Borno,” she said.
Two weeks ago, the Federal Government, through the Internal Red Cross
Society and Switzerland secured the released of 21 Chibok girls.
The government said efforts were ongoing to secure freedom for about
200 girls who were abducted by Boko Haram from Government Girls
Secondary School, Chibol, Borno State in April 2014.
The freed girls’ welfare had been taken over by government. They were hosted by President Buhari last week.
Amaechi should be investigated –Lawyers
Rotimi Amaechi |
Onyekachi Ubani, legal practitioner: If allegations have been made fingering Rotimi Amaechi or any other person, in the light and in the spirit of the fight against corruption, it is important that the allegation be painstakingly investigated. A lot of people had faulted some of the contents of the letters written by some of the affected Justices. For instance, one the judgments in question was said to have been delivered in January but Amaechi was alleged to have seen one of the justices asking him to ensure that the judgment is favourable to APC gubernatorial candidate in February. So, these are issues. If those things have been written and dates have been given it is something worthy of investigation. The investigation is very important for a government that is fighting corruption to either clear or indict those who allegedly attempted to corrupt the judicial system.
Having said that, to save the judicial institution, those who have actually been indicted and who are already being prepared to be arraigned in court should step aside. Nobody is asking them to resign, but they should step aside to clear their names. The institution of judiciary must not be denigrated further or be inflicted with collateral damage. It will not be proper to have a sitting judge who is under oath of office to be arraigned in court for criminal trial while he is still serving as a judge of the Federal Republic. We have seen some people write letters to the CJN admitting that they met with some politicians. If Nigeria is a country where public officers respect the institution and not themselves, you don’t need anyone to advise you to step aside.
Amaechi’s name has been mentioned two or three times over this matter. What he should also do is to step aside and have his name cleared before he comes back. His stepping aside will give room for a thorough investigation into the matter. We must build a system that is working; let’s elevate our standard, which had been so lowered as a nation.
We must, however, be very careful in that we must not tolerate a situation where people will just come up with allegations against a judge or public official tomorrow and we will just say the person should step aside because there has been a precedent. We must build a mechanism where any person that brings any false allegation against a judge would go in for it.
Chima Nnaji, legal practitioner: The truth of the matter is that it is a very messy situation. It’s unfortunate that they are now trying the matter in the media instead of bringing all the proofs of evidence to the court by the DSS, the judges and so on. The principle of law is that he who alleges must prove. The things that are being bandied in the media are within the domain of allegations. Talk is cheap; anybody can accuse any person of anything, anytime and follow it up in the media in order to tarnish somebody’s image even when sometimes it may not be true. So, I think that the person who is alleging that somebody has done something criminal should be able to follow due process and prove his case.
I also think that calls for both the judges and Amaechi to step aside infringes on the fundamental right of presumption of innocence until proven guilty. As an individual, somebody can allege that you asked him for N10 million bribe. Maybe people will not know that you had a land case with the person sometime in the past and that the person is not happy you are working and making progress in your family. So, if he sees making the allegation as an opportunity to finish with you, he can go to the media and canvass that since you have allegedly committed crime, you should be relieved of your job and if you are proven innocent you return back to it. It is not going to be the same; the job may not even be there for you again when the case ends. You may not even have the face to come back again after you have been thoroughly embarrassed in the media. So, I do not subscribe to the idea of anybody stepping aside based on mere allegations. If somebody is convinced that what he is saying is true, then let him institute an action in court so that the people will be charged formally. It is on the basis of that formality that the person can be asked to step aside while you clear yourself. But if there is no primafacial evidence for anything, then it must be thrown away and somebody must be charged for false information. So, neither Amaechi nor the judges should be talking of stepping aside.
Frank Agbedo, legal practitioner and President, Global Centre for Defence of Human Rights, Lagos: We need to approach issues concerning judges with caution especially when such issues border on corruption. Judges play the role of God on earth; that is why there is this general presumption that judges are incorruptible. This presumption is predicated on the belief that justice is rooted in confidence, and that confidence is deemed to have been eroded when a judge is seen to be corrupt. That is why anything that has to do with the integrity of a judge must be treated with the highest caution. This is because if at the end of the day the allegation turns out to be false, the judge would have lost his integrity while the public would have lost confidence in the ability of that judge to dispense justice. The collateral damage on the institution in most cases would be irredeemable.
Crimes are statutorily provided for in our statute book. So, when you level allegations against judges, you must be very sure of what you are doing because if it turns out that the allegation is false, you that made that allegation are not free from being prosecuted. In a case of bribery, both the person who made the allegation and the person involved are equally susceptible to trial before the court of law.
Therefore, I believe that a judge because of his training must be sure of his evidence before coming out to make an allegation. So, there is every need for the appropriate agencies to investigate it properly.
But what is happening now is outright media trial. The judges have not been charged to court yet. It is when they are charged to court that the prosecution will provide evidence to convince the court that the judges actually committed the alleged offence. And if at the end of the trial the defence feels that no case has been made against them, they will enter a no case submission and the case will be struck out. So, the judges just want to be heard. But ordinarily, it is premature; whatever is happening now has no bearing when the matter goes to court. The court will look at what is said or brought before it and not what is said in the media. The judges are simply playing into the hands of politicians. Politicians take their cases to the court of public opinion but matters are not decided based on public opinion but based on hard facts that are presented in the court of law.
There have been calls for the judges and even Amaechi to resign but my concern is the motive. If the motive is right, they should step aside but where the motive is just to shove them out of the system for some selfish reasons, they should remain there and clear themselves from those allegations.
Maxi Okwu, legal practitioner and politician: The whole thing is a very sordid and ugly development. I have been a victim of judicial corruption but I leave it at that. When I was very active as a litigation lawyer, I never for once participated in bribing a judicial officer. In fact, to me it was most unethical. But lately I have been more in politics than in litigation. So, when I now became a litigant and was trying to defend my mandate here and there, I discovered that the system had changed. It was a cash and carry arrangement and I felt sick.
A judge is not an ordinary Nigerian on the street; a judge has the power of life and death over citizens and should be above suspicion. My position now is that it is unethical for those judges who are now suspects to sit over the civil rights and obligations of fellow citizens. They should on their own step aside for the time being. If we are a moral society, morality demands that you cannot preside over my affair when you are a suspect; when you are an accused. It is very wrong. So, they should spare us the torture and on their own opt out until they are cleared.
“I am also surprised that the President has not called out Amaechi. A judge of the Supreme Court has made an allegation and sworn to an affidavit to back it up. It is a cogent matter that must be looked into. One of the judges quoted him as saying ‘oga is angry’; he is drawing the President into the matter. So, the President must take steps to clear his name if he must preside over this anti-corruption war. Amaechi has allegedly used the President’s name dishonourably as alleged by a judge; the President has a duty in his best interest to find out whether it is true or not. So, he must call out Amaechi.”
Lagos: Jakande Estate residents protest planned demolition of illegal shops
Scores of residents of Jakande Estate, Oke-Afa in Isolo, protested
the planned demolition by the State Building Investment Corporation
(LBIC) of illegally-built shops in their area.
Though affected residents have admitted that they ran afoul of the law by building structures in front of residential buildings, they appealed to state governor Akinwunmi Ambode not to go ahead with the planned demolitions.
The protesters, who staged their action in front of the Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA), said that the LBIC, headed by Mrs. Folashade Folivi, had served them demolition notices.
“We plead with Governor Ambode to intervene on our behalf because we fear that the LBIC officials led by would carry out their threat of demolition today.”
Mrs. Folashade Hamzat, a provision seller, who spoke on behalf of women residents, said that most of the operators of the affected shops are widows and retirees, whose major means of livelihood depend largely on the shops.
“We are not saying they should beautify the estate, but let them start by beautifying our roads, give us regular power supply, water and do their social responsibility, not demolition of our shops. And besides, most of these shop serve as shields around the estate, if the planned demolition was carried out, we would be exposed to high insecurity in the area.”
Addressing the protesters Lagos State House of Assembly majority leader, Mr. Sanai Agunbiade, said the House would look into their matter, promising to set up a committee on it.
“I want to appeal to you to remain calm as we investigate, in order to ensure that no one is illegally displaced. The present administration is committed to make the state safe for everyone,” Agunbiade said.

Suspected herdsmen in military uniforms attack Kaduna village, kill seven
Gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen in Army uniforms on Thursday
evening invaded the Ungwar Missi village in Jema’a Local Government
Area, Kaduna State, killing seven persons while several others were
critically injured.
Among those killed by the suspected
herdsmen dressed in Army uniforms were an 85-year-old District Head of
the village, John Zango and an 80-year-old man, Yakubu Abuja.
The Kaduna State Police Command confirmed the attack but said only four and not seven persons lost their lives.
Its Public Relations Officer, Aliyu
Usman, who confirmed the attack, said the police had since commenced
investigation into the matter.
This is coming just less than two weeks
after the attack on Godogodo, in Jema’a Local Government Area, which
claimed no fewer than 20 lives, a development that forced the chairman
of the local government area to place the area under curfew.
It was learnt that the group, in army
uniforms, came to Ungwar Missi village and called out the Village Head,
Mr. John Zogo, and the elders of the village for what they claimed to be
security briefing on the situation in the area.
An eyewitness said that as soon as the
group in military uniforms started discussing with the village head and
the elders, there were gunshots on the outskirts of the village and “the
same soldiers then shot and killed the village head and some others in
his house and fled.”
According to the eyewitness, they did not stay to defend the village.
“The whole village was burnt down and those who managed to escape have no place to stay now,” he said.
Girls in Aba start sex at age 10 – Study
A medical practitioner, Dr Godwin Uwaoma, said on Monday
that girls in Aba, Abia engage in active sexual activities from the age
of 10, raising higher chances of contracting HIV.
Uwaoma, the Chairman of the Thematic Working Group at the Nigerian Faith Based Advisory Council for AIDS, said that a 2014 research revealed the development.
He said that the study was conducted to find out the awareness of preventive measures among youths in the secondary schools for the Department of Public Health at the Imo State University.
He said, “We discovered that some girls in Aba start sexual activities at the age 10 to 12 and that at the age of 12, girls in Aba have “regular boyfriends” with whom they agree to have sex regularly.
“This was not known before. Usually HIV prevention was
targeted at age 15 upward but we now know that before 15 they have
become sexually active.
“And there is a lot of difference between when you are forced into it and you remove yourself thereafter and when at this age you now have a regular partner.
“That was what we discovered and it is not normal but an aberration but obviously the fact is there.”
At a lecture organised by the Aba chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association to mark their week, Uwaoma called for prevention rather than cure which was unavailable for HIV cases.
He urged the students to desist from watching pornographic films, playing sexual games with opposite sex and keeping bad friends to save them from sexual temptations.
In another lecture titled “Sex and Puberty,” Dr Kenneth Ngwogu, a lecturer at the Abia State University, said that puberty brought changes in character and body composition to young people.
Noting that most youths ruined their lives through dangerous actions like early sex, Ngwogu urged them to consult doctors or adults to manage the challenges of puberty.
He charged the youth to desist from sexual activities which could refocus their attention while in school to reach their goals of becoming successful people.

Lecturers risk 5-year-jail term for sexual advances, as Senate passes bill
University of Lagos |
Any lecturer found guilty to have broken the law, when passed, will risk a maximum five-year jail term or N5m fine or both.
The Senate also abolished the “consent” defence claim by sexual assault and rape suspects, as contained in the Criminal and Penal Codes.
It also categorises it as an offence when such person “has sexual intercourse with a student or demands for sex from a student or a prospective student as a condition to giving of a passing grade or the granting of honours and scholarships, or payment of stipend, allowance or other benefits, privileges or considerations.”
The bill further states, “An educator shall be guilty of committing an offence of sexual harassment against a student if he or she solicits sex from or makes sexual advances towards a student when the sexual solicitation or sexual advances result in an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment for the student.
“Or directs or induces another person to commit any act of sexual harassment under this bill, or cooperates in the commission of sexual harassment by another person without which it would not have been committed; grabs or hug or rubs or strokes or touches or pinches the breasts or hair or lips or buttocks or any other sensual part of the body of a student.
“Or displays, gives or sends by hand or courier or electronic or any other means naked or sexually explicit pictures or videos or sex related objects to a student.
“Or whistles or winks at a student or scream or exclaims or jokes or makes sexual complimentary or uncomplimentary remarks about a student’s physique.”
(SPORTS) EPL: We will welcome you back, Koeman tells Rooney
Wayne Rooney |
Everton manager Ronald Koeman says he
would love to bring Wayne Rooney back to Goodison Park if the England
star can’t revive his flagging Manchester United fortunes.
United captain Rooney has been relegated
to the bench by boss Jose Mourinho in recent weeks after a dip in form
that prompted speculation he could be on the verge of leaving Old
Trafford.
Koeman was asked on Friday if he would
be interested in offering Merseyside-born Rooney a return home to
Everton, who he left in 2004 to join United after starting his career
with the Toffees.
“First of all, I think it is a great player, and he has still not finished his career,” Koeman said.
“I do not know how his situation is, and I need to respect that situation. That’s not my problem.
“But even when we get one time the possibility that Rooney is an option for Everton, I’m very pleased.”
Rooney, who scored 17 goals in 77
appearances for Everton, was dropped by England interim manager Gareth
Southgate for their last World Cup qualifier, but Koeman remains a big
fan of the 31-year-old.
Asked if he was surprised by some of the criticism Rooney has endured this season, Koeman added: “That is part of football.
“He is enough of an experienced person in football that he knows what can happen and everybody gets periods of critics.
“It is part of football and of the business, and you need to stay calm — that is the best thing you can do.”
I robbed to fund my poultry farm –Suspect
A suspected leader of a car snatching
syndicate in Aba, Abia State, identified as Ladislas Ukpabi, has
confessed that he robbed to raise money to expand his poultry farm.
Ukpabi said the economic recession in
the country and frustration as a result of his dwindling poultry
business made him to consider armed robbery as an option.
The suspect expressed regret over his
action in an interview with Southern City News, saying, “I regret what I
did, I equally regret our country in general.
“Our leaders should do something to help the youths so that we can have what to fall back on after studying in the university.
“If I am well funded, I can raise about
10,000 birds without losing one; I’m not boasting about it. I can do
that very well right from the hatchery to the laying point.”
The suspect, who claimed to be a
graduate of Animal Science from Plateau State University, was arrested
by the police operatives in connection with a car theft case reported to
the Abayi Police Division in Aba.
It was learnt that one Mr. Felix Anyanwu
of Umuoda road in Aba had made a complaint that his Lexus Sports
utility vehicle was stolen from him at gun point on August 8, 2016 by
some hoodlums.
It was gathered that the police in its
investigation arrested one Igwe Uloma, who resides at No 1, Watchtower
Street by Old Express road, Aba, in the process of re-registration of
the stolen vehicle for one Obinna Nwokeji of Deeper Life road, Umuada
Uratta Aba.
Obinna, however, claimed that he bought
the vehicle from Ukpabi at the cost of N600,000, but later confessed to
be a member of the syndicate.
Exhibits recovered from the hoodlums are
one locally made single barrel short gun with six live cartridges, one
Lexus RX 330 SUV car with registration number JJJ 618 DL, one Honda CRV
car with registration number SSM 143 KK, a master car key, number plate
AK 103 GR and one standing fan.
The police also arrested one Moses
Nwosu, an automobile panel beater/sprayer painter based at Orji in
Owerri, Imo State, who allegedly repainted the stolen vehicles from its
original colour to black for Obinna.
Nwosu however said he was not aware that the vehicle was stolen.
He said, “I didn’t know the car was stolen; I met Obinna through one of my brothers, who is a driver.
“He asked me to repaint the car black
for his father’s burial and I asked him why he wanted to repaint it and
he said he didn’t want his family members to know that the car belongs
to his father after the burial.
“But before I could finish the job, he called me to come and pick another car to work on, that was how I was arrested.”
The Abia State Commissioner of Police,
Mr. Adeleye Oyebade, who confirmed the arrest of the hoodlums, said the
suspect had confessed to the crime and would soon be arraigned.
Aau students protest school fees hike
STUDENTS of the Ambrose Alli University,
Ekpoma, Edo State, on Friday staged a protest over the alleged increase
in school fees by the management of the institution.
The protesters, who were carried
placards, accused the university authorities of allegedly hiking the
fees by 400 percent to the detriment of the students.
They explained that the fees were
increased from the initial N47,000 to N160,000 for some faculties and
N200,000 and above for others.
The students noted that the current situation in the country would not guarantee the payment of such an amount.
They, therefore, urged the state
government and management of the school to reverse the fees, adding that
the students would not want to be lured into crime or prostitution due
to the inability of their parents to afford the fees.
One of the students, Ehanire Aisosa,
lamented that the increment was in contradiction with the ideals of the
founding fathers of the institution, which he said was ‘Education for
all’.
Aisosa said, “Before the current
administration, the fee was N47,000. But the fee has been increased by
400 percent; we are now paying N160,000 for the Faculty of Social
Science, Management N200,000 and above N200,000 for the College of
Medicine.
“We do not want this increase. Education
is for everybody and not only the rich. They are trying to deprive the
poor of education.”
Another student, who identified himself
as Eghosa said, “I told my mother about the situation yesterday
(Thursday) and she advised me to withdraw and apply for admission in a
different university.
“I am tired of the situation and my
parents are not financially buoyant. Where do they expect us to see the
money? So, they have to reduce it.”
But the Public Relations Officer of the university, Edward Aihevba, dismissed the claim as false.
Aihevba said that though the said
increase had been introduced for fresh students by the previous
administration, it did not affect other levels of students.
“What they are saying is completely
untrue. There has been no increase in school fees. Even the VC, during
the inaugural lecture yesterday (Thursday), made a categorical statement
that there was no increase in fees,” he told Southern City News on the
telephone.
Aihevba added, “Last year, when the
management of the former Vice-Chancellor was on, 100 Level students were
told that the fees had been increased.
“All students that were in session were
to continue to pay the old fees. But those who were coming in had the
chance to either accept or reject.”
Nigerian Army discovers 23 human skulls, arrests 44 IPOB members
Nigerian Army |
Operatives of the Joint Task Force, also known as Operation Delta Safe,
disclosed on Thursday that it discovered a total of 23 decomposing
human skulls and a human skeleton during raids on militant camps
belonging to suspected members of the Bakassi Strike Force in Bakassi
and Akpabuyo local government areas of Cross River State.
A statement issued on Thursday by the Coordinator, Joint Media Campaign Centre, Operation Delta Safe,
Lieutenant Colonel Olaolu Dauda, said the camps located at Ikot Ene
Idem, Abakpa and Ikang Inam communities in the Bakassi and Akpabuyo
councils of the state were destroyed on Wednesday.
It also said that 44 suspected members
of the Indigenous People of Biafra were arrested during the inauguration
of the Bayelsa State chapter of the group.
It said the arrested suspects were
apprehended at Lakeview Club, along Mabinton Estate, Okaka Road in
Bayelsa State while trying to disrupt public peace.
The statement read, “In fulfillment of Operation Delta Safe’s

all forms of criminality and protection of oil and gas facilities, on
October 26, 2016, troops of Sector 4 in Cross River State, acting on a
tip-off, carried out raids of Ikot Ene Idem, Abakpa and Ikang Inam
communities in the Bakassi and Akpabuyo local government areas.
“During the cordon-and-search
operations, troops discovered four militant shrines with 23 human skulls
in various stages of decomposition, a complete human skeleton and
several other human body parts. The shrines were destroyed as troops
continued the search for the perpetrators of these heinous acts against
humanity.”

"Our kidnappers gave us 10 strokes of cane daily for 12 days"- Adult victims
This is just sheer wickedness and evil. Haba mana!
The General Manager of Jofad Global Services, a construction firm in Warri, Delta State, Mr. Okelezo Wilfred, has said he and his colleagues, Mr. Roland Ukojevo and Israel Isawoele, were given 10 strokes of the cane every day by their captors for 12 days.
Wilfred said they fell into a trap because they were anxious to get a contract, describing their experience in captivity as terrible.
Wilfred disclosed that though they were fed with plantain and beans every day, the daily flogging affected their health.
He said he sustained injuries on his buttocks as a result of the flogging by the kidnappers, who later demanded N150m from his boss through a phone call.
“I felt an excruciating pain when they (kidnappers) flogged me. Every day, they flogged us 10 times. They did not flog Mr. Roland because of his age. Now, I have wounds in my buttocks.
“We got a little relief when they asked Mr. Ukojevo to do the flogging because his (strokes of cane) was not as painful as when the kidnappers flogged us by themselves,” he said.
Narrating his ordeal, Ukojevo said that one of the kidnappers, who disguised as a spokesman for the company that was to give his company a contract, took them somewhere in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area.
Ukojevo, who had swollen legs, added that their captors slapped him several times on the day they realised that they had become victims of kidnappers.
“We were taken to three different locations in the bush. They took us to a hut where we were blindfolded. We were there for six hours. They later took us away from that hut to another place where we spent another six hours and later, they took us across a river and we trekked for about two hours.”
He told Southern City News that they had learnt their lesson and would never go in search of contract based on a mere phone call, even as he thanked men of the NSCDC for coming to their rescue.
Speaking with Southern City News, the state Commandant of the NSCDC, Mrs. Helen Amakiri, said the victims were rescued by NSCDC operatives around Idu location, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA of Rivers State, while on their usual patrol.
“They are contractors from Warri, in Delta State. Someone called them from Rivers State that they had a contract for them in Rivers and so, the manager, site engineer and two others were mandated by their company to come down to Rivers State to see and negotiate how the job would be done.
“Unfortunately, they did not know that it was a set-up by the kidnappers. There was no contract; it was just a scam to get them out of Delta State and get them kidnapped.”

Housewife tortures 12- year-old girl for stealing meat
A 12-year-old girl, Mmesoma Ani, has
been admitted to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba,
Surulere, after she was allegedly tortured by her aunt, Mrs. Ogechi
Iruwane.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the
mother of three allegedly used her bare hands to pinch off the victim’s
chest, and inflicted injuries on her back.
Ani was also said to have been starved for two days for allegedly stealing a piece of meat.
Our correspondent learnt that a trader
on Nurudeen Street, Orile Iganmu, Lagos State, where the incident
happened, raised the alarm on Tuesday.
The case was said to have been reported to the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender.
Officials of the agency reportedly
apprehended the suspect and subsequently handed her over to the police
at the Orile Iganmu division.
The victim was afterwards taken to LUTH.
The trader, who discovered the incident, said Ani returned an empty bottle of soft drink to her when she saw her injuries.
She said, “I observed that she was not
walking well. I drew closer to her and that was when I saw that her
hands were also swollen. She said her aunt flogged her. She showed me
her chest and I saw that the skin covering one of her maturing breasts
had been pinched off. She removed her clothes and I was alarmed when I
saw serious injuries on her back.”
The trader, whose name is protected for security reason, explained that she called the attention of passersby to the injuries.
“I wanted to take her back to the aunt
to ask why she battered the girl so badly without taking her to a
hospital, but her neighbours told me it was not the first time she would
beat her. I decided to report the matter to the OPD,” she added.
A source at the OPD said the residents
prevented the suspect from escaping when she went to find out why Ani
had not returned home from the errand she sent her.
He said, “The girl claimed she was 12
years old, even though she looked younger. She also looked malnourished.
There were different scars on her back. The irony is that the suspect
has three children and they look well-fed.
“The girl claimed that she is the 11th
of 12 children. She said the woman came to take her from her parents in
Enugu State in December 2015. She said she was in primary three before
she was brought to Lagos, but since her arrival, she had not been going
to school. She said the woman accused her of stealing a piece of meat
and for about two days, she was not given food to eat.”
The Director of the OPD, Mrs. Salami
Olubukola, commended the trader that reported the case, urging residents
of the state to always be on the watch for child abuse cases.
“The girl is now in our care. We will not relent in our efforts to stem the tide of child abuse in Lagos State,” she added.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP
Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident, adding that the matter would soon
be charged to court.
Naira weakens to 470 on fresh dollar shortage
The naira tumbled to 470 against the United States dollar on Wednesday,
down from 455 on Tuesday as fresh dollar shortage hit the official and
parallel foreign exchange markets.
The naira tumbled to 470 against the
United States dollar on Wednesday, down from 455 on Tuesday as fresh
dollar shortage hit the official and parallel foreign exchange markets.
The local currency has been relatively stable, hovering around 455 against the greenback in the last one week.
This came after Travelex and First Bank
of Nigeria Limited commenced sale of foreign exchange to Bureau De
Change operators following the Central Bank of Nigeria’s approval.
Forex traders, however, said on Wednesdays that the scheme had failed to ease the biting dollar shortage in the country.
“What we get from Travelex is not sufficient,” one trader told Reuters, referring to the demand in the market.
At the official market, the naira closed
at 305.50 per dollar, a level it had maintained for more than two
months, supported by the CBN interventions.
Earlier, the CBN asked international
money transfer operators to sell dollars directly to the BDC operators
to boost liquidity and narrow the gulf between the parallel market and
the official market rates.
Travelex sells around $15,000 to 1,000
retail currency outlets weekly, but the amount is a fraction of what is
required to cover the demand from individuals and small businesses.
Dollar shortages have caused many firms
to halt operations and lay off workers, compounding an economic crisis
exacerbated by the fall in global oil price, which accounts for 70 per
cent of Nigeria’s budget revenue.
The CBN has struggled to support the
naira as the nation’s external reserves continue to fall. Traders said
the naira had been testing new lows as they tried to find thresholds
where liquidity could begin to return
Fraudsters dupe Ogun lawmaker, police bust den
The Den |
The Zone 2 Police Command has uncovered a
suspected den of fraudsters in a remote area of Isihun in the
Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The den is located in a thick forest, and has about six buildings with four of them linked together by underground tunnels.
The police said the den was where the fraudsters had been allegedly duping their victims of money.
It was gathered that the lid was blown
off their operation on Monday after one of their victims, who is also a
member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, representing Waterside
Constituency, Harrison Adeyemi, reported them to the police.
Adeyemi, who was allegedly defrauded to
the tune of N15,000 by the fraudsters on his visit to the den, had
reported their activities to the police.
The lawmaker stated that he fell into
the hands of the suspects after he got airtime worth N1,500 through a
text message from one of the fraudsters.
Adeyemi said when he received the message on his mobile phone, he sent it back through another text message to the sender.
The lawmaker said he got a call later
from one of the fraudsters acknowledging his sincerity, and from there
the suspects started communicating with him and told him they could help
him, being traditional herbalists.
He said, “They told me they are Agbomola and they could assist me. But I ignored them. They were persistent and I decided to visit them.
“But when I got there, I discovered that
it was all a scam. But I played along with them. They told me to drop
money at each shrine point, and I had to drop N1,000 each at the 15
points they introduced to me.”
The fraudsters were alleged to have told the lawmaker to bring N40m and a lady during his next visit.
He said after some weeks without seeing
him, the suspects started threatening him on the telephone, claiming
that he had discovered their secret.
“Initially, I ignored them, but when the calls persisted till this month, I reported them to the police,” the lawmaker added.
It was gathered that after the report on
the activities of the fraudsters, policemen from the Zonal Intervention
Squad, Zone 2 Command, stormed their hideout, arresting two of the
suspected fraudsters.
The Assistant Inspector-General of
Police, Abdulmajid Ali, who led journalists to the den on Wednesday,
said the fraudsters had been in the business for some time before the
long arm of the law caught up with them.
He said, “We got a lot of reports about them and we decided to swoop on them. Two of them were arrested. Others are at large.”
He explained that the suspected
fraudsters used fake rituals to defraud the people, adding that the
police would investigate them further.
One of the suspects, who identified
himself simply as Alhaji Taye, confessed that the oracles in the shrines
were meant to deceive people in order to extort money from their
victims.
“We collect money from susceptible people; nothing else,” he added.

Police to deploy 24,000 officers for Ondo gov poll
Ondo state police commissioner Hilda Harrison |
The Ondo State Commissioner of Police,
Mrs. Hilda Harrison, has said that 24,000 officers and men of the
Nigeria Police Force will provide security during the November 26, 2016
governorship election in the state.
Harrison said this during the signing of
a peace accord with political parties at the Officers’ Mess Akure, the
state capital on Wednesday.
She warned members of the political
parties that would be participating in the election against violence,
saying the police would deal ruthlessly with anybody caught fomenting
trouble during the campaign and the election.
She said, “There will be no room for
breakdown of law and order on the day of the election. I hope that a
week to the election, over 24,000 policemen will be sent here to provide
security.
“Tearing of posters should stop, we have
received information that some people are tearing the posters of
opposing parties; we won’t allow this any longer. Nobody has the right
to tear the posters of another political party.
“There must not be throwing of stones or
other dangerous weapons at anybody during campaigns. We have to be
law-abiding so that we can have peace during the election period. “
Responding, the state Chairman of the
Social Democratic Party, Chief Korede Duyile, appealed to the police to
provide adequate security during the election.
Similarly, the Deputy Chairman of the
Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Fatai Adams, said members of his party
would cooperate with the security agencies during the election period.
Some of the political parties
represented at the event included the PDP, the SDP, the KOWA Party, the
Peoples Redemption Party and the Democratic Peoples Party.
My Manchester life a disaster – Mourinho
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho
has admitted that living in Manchester has been a “bit of a disaster”
as he opened up about frustrations of staying in a hotel and facing the
paparazzi, Soccernet reports.
The former Chelsea coach is facing huge
pressure after United slumped to a 4-0 defeat over the weekend against
Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. The huge loss extended United’s poor run to
one win in six Premier league matches.
Mourinho’s predicament has been compounded by his off-field arrangements to stay alone at the Lowry Hotel in Salford.
“You know the history of the paparazzi,
for the hotel and the brand that sponsors me, the clothes brand, (it)
is amazing because they are there every day,” he told Sky Sports.
“Everybody knows the name of the hotel. Everybody knows the last arrivals of that brand. So for them, it is amazing.
“For me it’s a bit of a disaster because
I want sometimes to walk a little bit and I can’t. I just want to cross
the bridge and go for a restaurant. I can’t, so it is really bad. But I
have my apps and I can ask for food to also be delivered.”
As if having his every move monitored
closely by the media is not enough, Mourinho is also missing family life
as he continues to search for a suitable apartment while his wife,
Tami, and children Matilde and Jose Jr. remain in London.
“The reality is that my daughter will be
20 next week, my son will be 17 in a couple of months. They are very
stable. University in London. Football in London. Friends,” Mourinho
added.
“So they are in an age where they can’t
chase me like they did before. So for the first time the family lives in
a different way. We try to feel it, we try to see the evolution of our
feelings and see how we cope with the situation. But if I find a nice
apartment with a good connection from the garage to the apartment, maybe
I do it, but I can’t cook.”

(NEWS)Court to hear Patience Jonathan’s suit against EFCC in December
Patience Jonathan |
A Federal High Court in Lagos on
Wednesday fixed Dec. 7 to hear a suit by ex-First Lady, Mrs. Patience
Jonathan, against the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, seeking
to unfreeze her account.
Other respondents in the suit are Skye
Bank and a former Special Assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan,
Waripama-Owei Dudafa.
Also joined in the suit are Pluto
Property and Investment company Ltd, Seagate Property Development and
Investment Company Ltd, Transocean Property and Investment Company Ltd
and Globus Integrarted Service Ltd.
The ex-first lady is demanding the sum of $200 million from the commission as damages for infringing on her rights.
She is also urging the court to issue an
order discharging the freezing order and restrain the EFCC and its
agent from further placing a freezing order on the said accounts.
When the case was called on Wednesday,
Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, announced appearance for the EFCC, while Mr.
Granville Abibo (SAN) appeared for Jonathan.
Addressing the court, Oyedepo informed
the judge that the case was coming up for the first time, adding that
some of the respondents had yet to be served with the court’s processes.
He said the case was not yet “ripe for hearing”, having been served with the processes on Oct. 19 and is yet to file a response.
His submission was, however, not contested by counsel to the plaintiff.
Consequently, Justice Babs Kuewumi fixed Dec. 7 for hearing.
In an affidavit in support deposed to by
Mr. Sammie Somiari, a lawyer, he averred that on March 22, 2010, she
(Jonathan) had opened five different accounts with Skye Bank with the
assistance of one Damola Bolodeoku and Dipo Oshodi.
He averred that the account mandate forms were duly completed and signed by her.
According to him, Jonathan subsequently
discovered that apart from one of the accounts that bore her name, the
other four accounts were opened in the name of four companies which were
companies belonging to Dudafa.
He said she also observed that the ATM
cards of the said accounts were issued in the names of the companies,
adding that she complained to Dudafa, who promised to effect the
necessary changes.
He said Dipo Oshodi also promised to effect the necessary changes.
Somiari averred that Jonathan is not a
director, shareholder or participant in these companies and the funds in
the said accounts were solely owned and operated by her.
He said, “Dudafa does not own any part of the funds in the said accounts.”
According to the deponent, the Skye Bank
official, (Oshodi), did not effect the instructions of the plaintiff to
change the name of the said accounts to her name, in spite of repeated
request.
He stated that notwithstanding the
refusal of the bank to effect the necessary changes, she had been using
the said ATM cards without any interference.
The deponent averred that sometime in
July, Jonathan discovered that the ATM cards were not functioning, and
immediately contacted the bank, who informed her that a “No
debit/freezing order” had been placed on the accounts.
“On further enquiry, the bank informed
her that the accounts were frozen on the directive of EFCC as a result
of ongoing investigation in relation to Dudafa.”
Jonathan, therefore, contended that she
was never arrested or invited by the EFCC prior to the freezing order
placed on the accounts.
She further contends that the freezing
order on her funds on the directive of EFCC without an order of the
court is unlawful and illegal.
Consequently, Jonathan is seeking an
order of court, directing the unfreezing of her account forthwith and
also wants an order restraining the EFCC from taking further steps in
relation to the said account pending the determination of the suit.

My husband turned me to slave – woman tells court
A housewife, Mrs Grace Olorunfemi, on
Wednesday prayed an Akure Customary Court to dissolve her 11-year-old
marriage, claiming the union had turned her to a slave.
Grace submitted that continued marriage to Abiodun would be tantamount to endless servitude.
She alleged that her husband had no care
for her and their two children, compelling her to engage in manual
labour to fend for the family.
She said, “I prefer to be single than continue to live with Abiodun. He thought I am in his house as a slave.”
She submitted that in spite of her complaints, Abiodun failed to repent.
However, Abiodun told the court that he was not ready for divorce.
He promised to change his attitude and be a responsible husband.
The President of the court, Mr. Rotimi Olusanya, advised the respondent to turn a new leaf to save his marriage.
Olusanya also urged Grace to be patient and see if her husband would change his attitude.
He adjourned the case till Nov.17 for further hearing.
